 Welcome from the General Co-Chairs

Mario Gerla, UCLA & Javier Gozalvez, University Miguel Hernandez

It is our great pleasure to welcome attendees to the first edition of the IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (IEEE WiVeC'2007).

As we have witnessed over the last years, wireless vehicular communications have received an increasing attention from the research and industrial communities due to their potential to increase road safety and transport efficiency while providing Internet access on the move. Considering that the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) fields of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) cover all technical aspects related to wireless vehicular communications, the VTS decided to establish this new technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications.

This first issue of IEEE WiVeC has been co-located with the fall edition of the renown IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference in Baltimore. Consequently, a joint registration option including both WiVeC and VTC was offered, and has resulted in over 110 delegates registered to WiVeC (at the time of writing this message), which highlights the interests of the technical community in WiVeC technologies and the support received for this event.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the excellent work provided by the members of the organizing committee, in particular Hannes, Fan, Jim, Timo and James; their valuable contributions have been key to make this new symposium a reality.

We hope you will have a fruitful technical conference while taking the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and history of Baltimore and its Harbour.

 Welcome from the TPC Co-Chairs

Fan Bai, General Motors & Hannes Hartenstein, Karlsruhe University

Welcome to WiVec2007 in Baltimore! The Technical Program Committee has prepared an exciting program of technical presentations covering the wireless vehicular communication area. We have accepted a total of 29 papers from 56 submitted papers with 16 papers being presented orally and 13 papers as poster presentations. The papers cover the full range of wireless communications in vehicular environment: physical layer area; protocol design area; and applications, systems and experiments area.

We would like to express our gratitude to all authors who submitted their work to IEEE WiVec 2007. All submitted papers have been thoroughly and independently reviewed in accordance with standard blind reviewing practices. Each of the submitted papers was assigned to at least 3 reviewers.

The review process is a real community effort, and we were very fortunate to have a dedicated group of people serving as the technical program committee members who spent their valuable time in providing reviews and drafting the external reviews. In total we had 31 TPC members, and the majority of review tasks are conducted by TPC members and executive committee members. Thanks go to all reviewers for providing timely and high quality reviews to complete this enormous task.

We would like to thank Javier Gozalvez and Mario Gerla for their excellent work as WiVeC general co-chairs and James Irvine for his invaluable advices and help.

We hope that you will find the program and presentations exciting and thought-provoking, and look forward to your company in a very exciting WiVec 2007 in Baltimore. We hope that you enjoy the conference and your visit to Baltimore and to US.

 Welcome from the VTS President

Charles Backof, President, IEEE VT Society

On behalf of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 1st IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The IEEE VTS currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the VTS established this technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications. I’m certain that you will find this Symposium interesting and rewarding, and I hope you use this event to develop deep ties to a strong technical community around this important subject.

The organization of a Symposium in a new area is a major endeavor that involves many people, mainly volunteers who are members of the Vehicular Technology Society. I thank them all for their generous commitment. A special thank you is in order to the General co-Chairs of the 1st IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications, Mario Gerla and Javier Gozalvez; to the Technical Program co-Chairs, Fan Bai and Hannes Hartenstein; and to all the other members of the Organizing Committee for the skilled and thoughtful implementation of an excellent program. Finally I wish to thank all the delegates attending, and urge you to take best advantage of the Symposium, the VTC Conference, and the beautiful city of Baltimore.
